Cary Family Photographer | What Should I Wear for Family Portraits?

This is a question I ask for anything that involves leaving my house and can be so daunting 🤣 Don’t worry though, as a family photographer in Cary, I’ve got you covered! I’ve compiled a list of 5 quick tips to help you in your decision making. After all, especially as mommas, we make decisions all day, everyday for multiple people including ourselves. Give your brain a rest and keep on reading.

5 Tips for Dressing Your Family for Portraits

1. Dress Momma First

This is my number one tip mostly because as women we can tear ourselves apart. I know I do it all of the time. I want you to pick out an outfit that you feel AMAZING in and that you feel comfortable in. It can have a pattern, or not. You can wear layers, or not. Want to wear a favorite dress? Perfect. Want to throw on jeans and a t-shirt? That is amazing, too. Feeling good is going to shine through in your photos. Plus, there is going to be a lot of snuggling, playing and being silly together so comfort is a must!

2. Build Around the Color Palette

I would recommend choosing 2-3 colors for your color palette, and then have variations of those colors, like darker or lighter shades of blue. Neutrals are always going to be your friend. A lot of times I like to pair solids and patterns. If you do decide to incorporate patterns, keep it small. When you look at your pictures you are wanting to see you, not a giant print that takes your eye right to it.

3. Accessorize

Maybe you have a color that you love that you are worried might just take over, use an accessory to incorporate it! Scarves, ties, hats, vests, they are all so fun, can add dimension and be easily removed and put back on to add some variety to your images. Also, having two boys of my own, any excuse to throw then in suspenders and a bow-tie is a good one 😊

4. Location

As a Cary family photographer I’ve got lots of great locations up my sleeve. When planning your color palette, do think about where you are going to be having your family session. If you are going to be in a field or surrounded by a lot of trees, green may not be the best choice as you might get lost in the background. Of course, if you love green and feel great in green, then by all means where green. If you head to a downtown area with lovely white brick everywhere, maybe don’t ‘wear a white shirt. We want you and your family to pop in your images, not camouflage into the background.

5. Make Sure Kids are Comfortable

Maybe this should be higher on my list but generally we can bribe our kiddos to put up with wearing nice clothes for an hour 🤣 Sometimes little girls will show up in heels, or little boys are in so many layers that they just can’t get move. Boys can be especially challenging because at least for the most part little girls don’t mind wearing a breezy dress but we expect our little guys to wear pants and long sleeve button up shirts (mine included!). Just make sure that your kiddo can move around in what they are wearing and layers are always good. If they get to warm it’s easy to remove a sweater or a vest.

Well, I hope you found something here that can help you the next time you schedule family photos. By the way, if you are looking for a family photographer in Cary, you can find a great one right here 😉
